Understanding Environmental Justice in the Face of Injustice: One Maryland One Book Program

  • Snow Hill High School 305 S Church St Snow Hill MD 21863 United States (map)

Dr. Shane Hall of Salisbury University discusses why some people are exposed to high levels of pollution or don’t have access to clean water, while others enjoy green spaces and nutritious food. This talk provides a broader critical context for Dr. Mona Hanna-Attisha’s What the Eyes Don’t See. Throughout the book, Dr. Hanna- Attisha returns to D.H. Lawrence’s adage, “The eyes don’t see what the mind doesn’t know” as she works to uncover lead poisoning of Flint, Michigan. By understanding “environmental justice”-- as a social movement and field of study-- we can better train our minds to see how social and environmental inequalities intertwine, and also ways to effectively fight for “our political, economic and cultural liberation.”
